May Pang "The Lost Weekend" Exhibition

Reception to be held Friday, July 25 from 5 - 7 PM

Few people knew John Lennon as intimately as May Pang. Renowned for her pivotal role during Lennon’s “Lost Weekend,” an 18-month period from late 1973 to 1975, Pang was far more than Lennon’s romantic partner—she was a key figure in his personal and creative renaissance.

During this period, Lennon experienced one of the most artistically and commercially productive phases of his post-Beatles career. With Pang’s encouragement and support, he produced the albums Mind Games, Walls and Bridges, and Rock 'n' Roll, achieving his first solo #1 hit, “Whatever Gets You Through the Night.” Pang’s influence extended to creative collaborations with legends like Elton John, David Bowie, Harry Nilsson, Mick Jagger, and Ringo Starr. Notably, Pang’s whispered voice is heard on “#9 Dream,” and Lennon wrote “Surprise, Surprise (Sweet Bird of Paradox)” about her.

Beyond music, Pang played a crucial role in rekindling Lennon’s connections with family and friends. She facilitated a long-overdue reunion between Lennon and his son, Julian, as well as fellow bandmates George Harrison and Paul McCartney (which included a historic jam session with McCartney, Stevie Wonder and others.)  Her photograph of Julian Lennon is featured on the cover of his album Jude, and her image of John Lennon in the Catskills appeared on the sleeve of the “Imagine” single in England & Japan, cementing her artistic legacy.

Pang’s work extended beyond Lennon. Her early career began at ABKCO Industries, where she worked with Allen Klein’s firm, managing the Beatles’ Apple Corps and the Rolling Stones. By 1970, Lennon and Yoko Ono hired her as their personal assistant, later promoting her to production coordinator. Pang earned a gold record for her contributions to Walls and Bridges and continued to impact the industry by managing releases for artists like Bob Marley and Robert Palmer during her time at Island Records.

In 1983, Pang published Loving John, a candid memoir detailing her relationship with Lennon and her behind-the-scenes role in his life and work. In 2008, she released Instamatic Karma, a collection of intimate photographs of Lennon during the Lost Weekend. These photos, which include iconic moments like Lennon signing the contract to dissolve the Beatles, have been exhibited across the U.S. in The Lost Weekend – The Photography of May Pang.

May Pang remains a sought-after voice in the music and photography worlds, with appearances in major publications and interviews on prominent platforms such as Good Morning America, CBS Sunday Morning, and Howard Stern. Her story was further immortalized in the acclaimed documentary The Lost Weekend: A Love Story, which premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival and is now available on major streaming platforms.

Today, Pang continues to share her unique perspective through her photographs and storytelling, offering an intimate glimpse into one of rock and roll’s most fascinating chapters.

May Pang will be at Cygnet Gallery meeting Gallery guests and sharing the stories behind her private collection of limited edition John Lennon Photos.

The Pomegranate Collection at 117 Main Street, Northeast Harbor

Open now for the season…

The Pomegranate Collection Story

Pomegranate Style is eclectic, funky, bohemian, colorful and respectfully maximalist.

The Pomegranate vibe harkens to the design of the former Pomegranate Inn located in Portland, Maine’s coveted West End neighborhood.  Streets of precisely designed architectural beauties with many John Calvin Stevens creations, most of the West End’s individual homes are on the National Historic Register and or the local historic buildings list.  The Pomegranate at the corner of Neal and Carroll Streets is one of the more distinctive structures.

Pomegranate Inn was imagined by Isabel Smiles and was one of the first meticulously designed and award winning Bed & Breakfasts in Maine.  Hand painted walls, a vast collection of eccentric and original art much by emerging Maine talent, unique antiques and modern finishes enhanced the space to the delight of guests and reviewers.

The inn was purchased in 2007 by Kim Swan (as Cygnet Gallery’s second iteration was thriving in Portland’s Arts District)  and the art, antique and decor collection was added to over the next seventeen years.  In the fall of 2024 the inn was sold to young, experienced professionals who wanted to take the property in a different direction design wise and create their own image of hospitality.

Thus the majority of the art and antique collection was moved to Swan’s eponymous Farm in Sullivan, Maine to use in her newest hospitality venture.  Treasures without a destination will be available for purchase along with myriad pieces left over from other design and construction projects.

The summer collection pop up will arise at 117 Main Street in Northeast Harbor, Maine for the 2025 season.  Staff will add to the items available for sale as space allows hopefully dispersing with the entire array of decorative pieces, furniture and art by summer’s end.

Season Opening Reception: James Lagasse Watercolor Painter

Jim Lagasse is an artist based in Bangor, Maine. His work reflects his love for the everyday moments that make life extraordinary. His inspirations range from lobster rolls and whoopie pies to quiet drives down Maine’s backroads, local stories, and the occasional purring of his cats while painting in his studio.

Jim’s art journey is as authentic as his personality. Primarily self-taught, he embraced watercolor for its unpredictability and challenges, honing his skills through experimentation and curiosity. Despite a college art professor doubting his vision, Jim’s dedication to his craft has led to remarkable achievements, including teaching watercolor classes in Bangor and having his work featured in National Magazines such as Blick Art and Leisure Painter (UK), as well as appearing on National Television. His work has appeared on such stage sets for television including "Blue Bloods", "HBO, and Saturday Night Live.

“SUMMER SUNDAYS” ON MDI: POP-UP JEWELRY TRUNK SHOW AND PERSONAL APPEARANCE BY RAY GRIFFITHS

Australian-born jeweler, RAY GRIFFITHS, has been creating exquisite jewelry for more than 30 years. The son of a shoemaker, Ray grew up spending weekends at his father’s workshop and developed a deep sensibility towards craftsmanship and an appreciation for handmade details. Fueled by a love of gemstones and jewelry from an early age, when he was just 15 Ray began an apprenticeship to jewelry masters and tiara makers at Dunklings Jewellers in Melbourne, Australia. It was there that he learned the art behind the construction and restoration of fine jewels — which was to form the basis and ongoing motif in all of his own designs and production.

“SUMMER SUNDAYS” ON MDI: POP-UP JEWELRY TRUNK SHOW AND PERSONAL APPEARANCE BY STEVE FORD OF FORD FORLANO

Throughout their collaboration, STEVEN FORD and DAVID FORLANO of FORD FORLANO have often looked to nature for inspiration. In seed clusters, shell formations and flower buds, for instance, numerous carefully organized parts, seemingly identical, but really unique, are arranged beautifully. These exquisite structures led them into new ways of envisioning necklaces, for example, both three-dimensionally and texturally.

J. MCVEIGH JEWELRY “SUMMER SUNDAYS” ON MDI: POP-UP JEWELRY TRUNK SHOW AND PERSONAL APPEARANCE BY SAM WOEHRMANN

With a lifelong intrigue of gemstones and an interest in mathematics, SAM WOEHRMANN was lured into the metal arts. Learning to both manipulate metal and work with stones has led his work into what it is today. Sam not only finds the amazing colors gems produce, but also the raw crystal structures intriguing. The use of this and different color combinations of metal alloys let’s him explore designs not only in shape, but in depths along another plane of vision. Being influenced by Earth’s creations and urban backdrops gives Sam’s work a strong geometric and industrial look.

Please join us on Sunday July 9th from 10am to 4pm for a J. McVeigh Jewelry trunk show with appearance by Sam Woehrmann,
